Dr. Tayarisha Batchelor is a compassionate leader with a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades. Her journey began in the Hartford Public School system, where she dedicated over two decades to serving students in various roles. As Director of Equity and Access for Simsbury Public Schools, she is passionate about creating inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students.
Dr. Batchelor's leadership experience extends beyond her current role. As an Associate Principal, she successfully led the design and implementation of an innovative International Baccalaureate (IB) program. She also demonstrated exceptional resilience and leadership during a challenging period when the second school that she led faced a permanent closure due to environmental issues. Dr. Batchelor effectively navigated this crisis, prioritizing the well-being of students, staff, and the community throughout the transition. She successfully led the development and implementation of a comprehensive transition plan, ensuring a smooth and supportive transition for all stakeholders.
Dr. Batchelor's leadership journey has been deeply personal. As a mother, she navigated the challenges of balancing a demanding career with the joys of raising a family. These experiences have provided her with invaluable insights into the importance of resilience, flexibility, and self-care. As she mentors others, Dr. Batchelor shares candid stories and reflections, offering strategies for turning obstacles into opportunities and finding fulfillment in both personal and professional endeavors.
Key Accomplishments
Successfully implemented innovative programs like community schools, ESL, and GED at Clark Street School.
Partnered with the National Society of Black Engineers to establish the first Hartford Junior Chapter at Rawson STEAM School.
Oversees the district's equity council and has established Employee Resource Groups for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals in Simsbury Public Schools.
Initiated the Encouraging Words Campaign, promoting collaboration among four school districts.
Actively participates in district committees, including Strategic Planning and Professional Development.
Serves as the liaison to Simsbury's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Town Council, and the Juneteenth Planning Committee for Farmington Valley.
